Wakehurst Place – where plants, history, and a healthy dose of “what on earth is that?” come together in perfect harmony! Nestled in West Sussex (for those who still don’t know their Sussexes), this botanical wonderland is managed by the fine folks at Kew Gardens and owned by the National Trust, because who else would have the audacity to own 2 square kilometres of green loveliness?
The house itself was built in the 16th century – back when people thought wooden clogs were a solid fashion choice. It’s been home to rich and powerful families who probably argued over who had the best hedge maze. But it’s the gardens that really steal the show – with water features, woodlands, wetlands, and a seed bank with enough seeds to restart civilization after the next apocalypse. Fun, right?
So, if you like plants, history, or just want to pretend you’re in Downton Abbey, pack a sandwich, and wander through Wakehurst. And if the plants don’t amaze you, the Millennium Seed Bank will – it’s like a library but for seeds. Nerd heaven.
